Artist's Statement Mr. Kreider is indisposed this week as he is a man broken, inconsolable about a personal question. While waiting for his reestablishment, we reprint a drawing which appeared on this Web site, but not in the newspaper, on last year’s American Day of Independence. Instead of the usual artist’s comment, I reproduce comments made by Mr. Kreider at a reading at the Warehouse Theater in Washington, D.C. during the "Laugh While You Can" tour of 2005. (Thanks to the intern of Mr. Tom Hart to provide me this transcription.) Mr. Kreider also asked me to refer you to the text of Bruce Springsteen’s "Land of Hope and Dreams," which in his current state it is the only song that he can withstand. Additionally, I would inform the readers that I have lengthily updated the letters pages from February through June of this year. Respect, C.-H.
"I, too, said I would leave the country before the election. But it's easier said than done, because, you know, I live here--all my friends are here, all my favorite bars are here, and all my things are here. And it's my country, goddamn it. I don't want to let it be Their country. That's one reason I wear this American flag lapel, which I'll tell you I feel very self-conscious about when I'm not up here on the stage--I imagine people are looking at me and thinking, 'asshole.' But… when I go to anti-war protests, I dress [conservatively], I carry a big American flag. I don't want to let them appropriate that symbolism for themselves. It's not their country. It's Hunter Thompson's country; it's Jimi Hendrix's country; it's our America too. So I guess we have to stay." -Tim Kreider 29 March 2005
